2024 Youth Sunday

The National Youth Cabinet met Feb. 2-4, 2024, to discern the theme for National Youth Sunday. The cabinet selected Jeremiah 29:11 as their focus scripture, with the theme “Your life; God’s direction.”

Congregations are invited to celebrate the leadership of their high school youth by participating in National Youth Sunday, with a suggested date of May 5.

Members of the cabinet include Felisha Diamond of Eden, N.C.; Sebastian Eikler of Goshen, Ind.; Nik Gameti of Naperville, Ill.; Autumn Sauder of Mount Joy, Pa.; and Calla Stoltzfus of Elizabethtown, Pa.; with adult advisor Tony Price, pastor of Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren in Ohio; and staff member Becky Ullom Naugle, director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Church of the Brethren.

Reflecting on the scripture, the cabinet shared: “Although we have this stress and anxiety in our lives, as Christians we can have peace knowing that God will provide us a future that will flourish and prosper as long as we continue to seek God and God’s perfect will for us. Join us in celebrating the leadership and faithfulness of your senior high youth on National Youth Sunday!”

Worship resources, written by the cabinet, will be made available at www.brethren.org/yya/national-youth-sunday.

April 22 – 27, 2023
Washington, D.C.

Theme: “Hot and Hungry,” 1 Kings 17:7-16

During a time of drought and famine, a widow with her son was asked for food by the prophet Elijah. Her response, “I am preparing to make a last meal, and then we will die” alongside her willingness to trust God’s provision, demonstrates both hope and despair (1 Kings 17:7-16). As Christians, we are called to a ministry of caring for our neighbors and all of God’s creation; we are called to a ministry of living in hope amidst despair. The overlapping crises climate change and food insecurity are dire, but the possibilities for response are dynamic. In the past years, millions of people have entered or reentered extreme food insecurity due to disruptions caused by the effects of climate change. Significant changes are needed to slow and reverse climate change, as well as support communities most hurt by these disasters. Such changes must happen both at the policy level, as well as at community and personal levels.

Our call to peacemaking, racial justice, and service to all means that we are to act in our communities but also address policymakers to enact laws that prioritize the most vulnerable. At CCS 2023, you will learn about the climate crisis in relation to food security. You will gain tools to address Congress, hear examples of local communities’ ministry and Church of the Brethren churches around the world, and strengthen your biblical understanding of God’s love in this work.

Who is eligible to attend?

All high school youth and their adult advisors are eligible to attend the seminar. Churches are strongly encouraged to register an advisor with their youth, even if only one or two youth attend. Churches are required to register one advisor for every four youth.

What is the cost?

The $500 registration fee includes: all event programming, shared room hotel lodging for five nights, and 2 dinner meals. Participants need to bring additional money for most meals, sightseeing, personal expenses, and subway/taxi fares.

When can participants register?

Online registration opens here January 9, 2023, at 12 p.m. central time
